If your computer has a DVD player, then it's probably easier just to rip the desired DVD straight on to your harddrive, without using the middle-man of your camera. There is a huge range of software that can do this.
VideoHelp.com is a site with lots of tutorials, links to free software, and exhaustive discussion forums, regarding a whole heap of technical problems. You can search the forums to find your answer, and on the few occasions it's not there, you can post a question and get it answered very quickly (in my experience, less than 10 minutes).

ahem, of course there's the little task of defeating the anti-priracy feature first!

Get a DVD, search the Net for Smart Ripper 2.41, install it, rip the DVD to your computer (CSS is no obstacle with this software), get flaskMPG 0.594, convert the DVD-rip into an *.avi, get VirtualDub 1.5.10 and edit the rip. All these programs are freeware.

I checked out videohelp.com and they had all the info i needed there, thanks richard.fisher. I need some rock concert crowd scenes for a short mockumentary we are making about a failed rock band who die in some stupid way and then become famous.
